I haven’t seen many cyclists in Valley Center. I will be curious to see WHO votes to approve this plan, who pushes these roundabouts, who wants to shrink our driving lanes from 12 feet to 11 feet to accommodate bike lanes, and who wants to add extensions to give bikers more of a right-of-way. It only takes one accident or one death, and we will see the concern. Not often enough to be a concern.” It’s not only a concern when there’s a fire, but also a concern about safely traveling through a roundabout with oversized or emergency vehicles. The quote when asked about those roundabouts issues was, “Gee, how often do we have fires. If one or more families are stuck behind a large RV, bus or horse trailer in a roundabout in the middle of a fire, and someone gets injured, the lawsuits will happen. Do roundabouts make sense in a rural community? No, Absolutely Not! Do we need more traffic lights, to slow folks down, yes. Those roads are being completely ignored. There have been accidents on Woods Valley, Cole Grade, Lilac, Gopher Canyon, the Valley Center Grade, Valley Center Road past Rite Aid and Vesper, just to name a few. We have several roads with challenges, not only 2.5 miles represented in the Corridor Concept Plan.

Those developing the plan don’t live in the community, don’t use the roads, and are not affected by the traffic and accidents. Why didn’t they want to take live questions during their presentation? I think the people of Valley Center wanted to hear what others had to say, which would be similar to other community meetings. The third and final meeting appeared to me as a presentation only, not an open dialog with the group as a whole. I’m really surprised that the County Team planned their third and final Concept meeting on the night of the Fire Board Meeting, omitting our fire board and their ability to weigh in on the topic. In addition, we are located within the highest Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone in the county. In a two-laned roundabout, these large vehicles are not guaranteed to stay in their lane, to make the turns, which means we will have to yield constantly or be sideswiped. We are a pass-through community to the desert, and we have a significant number of rural vehicles, oversized transportation, casino buses and emergency vehicles that travel our roads. However, I don’t see the logic in their concept regarding the roundabouts. Valley Center has concerns about speed, accidents, and congestion, even more now with the new developments. This is disheartening and fiscally careless. The County and their consultants, that came up with the idea to spend $53MM on 2.5 miles on Valley Center Road, are not looking at the bigger picture. I have serious concerns about the plan as it stands today.
